Kanpur is the industrial and business capital of Uttar Pradesh. It is also a center of academic activities and has a number of educational institutions of high repute. Besides C.S.J.M. University, the city has the privilege of having prestigious Institutions like Indian Institute of Pulses Research, National Sugar Institute, C.S.A. Agriculture University, Government Central Textile Institute, Government Leather Institute etc. The city is known mainly for its textile industry and leather industry.

The C.S.J.M University has been on the map of higher education for more than three decades. Established in 1966, it has more than 151 affiliated colleges in 14 districts. Spreading over campus of 264 acres, the University is booming with academic activities. While the undergraduate and post graduate programs in all disciplines of Arts, Science, Commerce, Law Engineering and Medicine are offered in the affiliated colleges and Institutes, the residential wing of the campus includes Faculties of Life Sciences, Business Management, Education and English. It has a Computer Center, a department of Adult and Continuing Education and Extension and a College Development Council. For catering to the needs of young engineering aspirants, the University has started an Institute of Engineering and Technology in the campus offering courses in four branches of engineering viz. Chemical, Computer Science and Information Technology, Electronics and Communications and Mechanical in the first instance.
